Jobs to do in the garden in August
The good weather is finally here so make sure your plants are kept watered especially hanging baskets and pots.
  • Cut back herbs now to encourage a new flush of tasty leaves to come through.
  • Spray your plants like aster, verbena, penstemon and salvia with a fungicide to keep them healthy.
  • Dead-head bedding plants to keep them flowering.
  • Take the seed pods off lilies for a better flower display next year.
  • Take cuttings of your favorite tender perennials such as pelargoniums and fuchsias to propagate them for next year. There is still a range of plants available to buy for filling in the gaps.
  • Pinch out the side shoots and tops on tomatoes to encourage more flowers.
  • Aubergines need a lot of food to keep them healthy so feed once a week with miraclegrow or phostrogen.
  • Sweetcorn is ready when you can pop a corn with your thumbnail and the kernels are milky in colour.
  • Soft fruit should be ready to pick. Check each day to stop the birds from eating the fruit.
Keep on gardening.
Anthony.
